The reason I put that fact sheet together is to help me and possibly others to figure out what each of us wants our government to do about immigration. I recently realized I don't know what I want done, which is no good. For example, I think the accepted notion that anyone born in the US is automatically a US Citizen has *extensive* implications. And I just discovered that this accepted notion may be in part a matter of interpretation. Perhaps a slight reinterpretation of the 14th amendment, without amending the Constitution, could eliminate the panic lots of people feel about having non-citizen immigrants in the country (by eliminating or circumscribing this anchor baby concept) and therefore open these people up to a guest worker program or whatever. Different folks may come to different conclusions about immigration based on the values they bring to the situation. But their conclusions shouldn't ignore the facts. Some of the values I personally bring to the immigration issue include: --We have more than enough prosperity in the USA, if we would distribute it more equitably. --Income inequality for US citizens should be getting less, not more. --We should share the prosperity of the USA around the world. But not fully, to countries/groups who will not control their population. --Those of us who are here, the US citizens, should allow immigration. --Changes should be done incrementally and steadily. I don't want a revolution. --Race shouldn't enter into this. --Religion shouldn't enter into this. --We need to stop UN-bashing/ignoring. --We have way too many people in jail (highest, %-wise of any developed nation, I think) and so we should be constantly getting rid of laws (victimless crime laws, ..) - not, in general adding laws (laws prohibiting risk-taking, laws criminalizing immigrants, ...). --While eager to avoid classes of second class citizens, I do not feel that this requires, say, that a child born in a US airport while the mother was traveling from Canada to Mexico should by that fact become a US citizen. --I would prefer an informed-democratic one-person-one-vote type of resolution to the immigration issue, even if that means that some of *my* values above are violated. are structured to own almost everything: real estate, air rights, shares of corporations, ...
